Come
travel with me as we take a walk through black history,
and I hope you have your best sneakers on, because this won't
be a short walk.
The road through black history includes pharaohs,
queens, nobleman, painters, writers, musicians, inventors,
explores, and if I was to go on the list would probably cover
pages. We as black people should be proud to be Afro-Americans,
our deeds have been many, our endurance phenomenal, and our accomplishments
great.
Blacks have contributed to many of the things we take for granted,
such as the light bulb, telephone, shoes, lawn mower, elevator,
pencil sharpener, lock, traffic light, just to name a few.
This walk through black history will be like no other walk
you have ever taken before. By the time you go through this
journey, you will be amazed at the many accomplishments that
blacks have made. Ours is a history of pride and endurance, we
are a people that even in the face of adversity have shown great
courage and fortitude.
Out of the chains of slavery our forefathers forged a great history
for us in America, a history that is as rich and as colorful as
America itself. In 1619 a ship brought about 20 blacks to the
shores of America, and I like what one author wrote about this
event.
For in the context of the meaning of America, it can be said without
exaggeration that no other ship ever called at an American port
with a more important cargo.
In the hold of that ship, in a manner of speaking, was the whole
gorgeous panorama of Black America, was jazz and the spirituals
and Funky Broadway. Bird was there and Bigger and Malcolm and
millions of other X's and crosses, along with Mahalia singing,
Gwendolyn Brooks rhyming, Duke Ellington composing, James Brown
grunting, Paul Robeson emoting, and Sidney Poitier walking. That
ship brought blues to America, it brought soul.
Americas history is intermingled with black history, in her
history is the blood, sweat, and tears of many Afican-Americans.
We have given her war heros, explores, and men of great stature.
As you take your walk through black history you will see why our
pride runs so deep. Many of these makers of black history were
driven by a desire to improve the lifes of their fellow man, regardless
of their color.
Even though because of the color of their skins they faced many
roadblocks they still forged ahead and achieved great triumph.
They left behind a legacy of determination, and greatness, one
that is still being followed by many blacks today.
History is a teacher, the lesson that we can learn from black
history is no matter how great the obstacle, with
pride, endurance, and determination you can make a difference.
You can go as far and be as great as you want to be.
